A practical guide to square, portrait and full-screen exports.
Start with where it will appear
A square export is 1080 × 1080 (1:1), a portrait export is 1080 × 1350 (4:5), and a full-screen Story or Reel cover is 1080 × 1920 (9:16). These are useful preparation presets, not a complete list of formats Instagram accepts.
Crop or pad?
Crop fills the frame but removes part of your source. Padding keeps the full image with space around it. Keep faces, captions and logos away from the edges, and inspect the exported file before posting.
Profile previews need a second check
The feed, profile grid and Reel tab may crop the same image differently. Always check the current publishing preview inside Instagram. Do not build essential meaning into the extreme edges.
